What does the parvovirus B19 IgM test measure?
The parvovirus B19 IgM test measures the immunoglobulin-M (IgM) antibodies produced in our blood against the parvovirus B19 infection. These antibodies are usually produced within a week or two after one gets infected and remain for about 90-120 days. Their level increases briefly and then slowly starts to decline, eventually reaching an undetectable range. The detection of IgM antibodies indicates a recent infection.
Risks/side effects of parvovirus B19 IgM test:
There are no side effects associated with the parvovirus B19 IgM test. However, you may feel a slight pain in the area from where the blood would be withdrawn. This can last for a few days.

How is the parvovirus B19 IgM test performed?
The parvovirus B19 IgM test involves taking a blood sample from a vein located in your arm. A syringe is used for the same. The area from where the blood would be taken would first be cleaned with an antiseptic solution. Once the blood sample has been collected, it will be sent to the laboratory.

Interpreting the parvovirus B19 IgM test results
A positive parvovirus B19 IgM result indicates an acute or a recent infection. If you are pregnant and your result is positive, your health and foetus health will be examined regularly using ultrasounds.
Moreover, a positive result can also occur due to the presence of some other disease. If the sample contains antinuclear antibodies or antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus, the parvovirus B19 IgM test result can be positive.
A negative parvovirus B19 IgM result does not necessarily mean the absence of parvovirus IgM antibodies. It may signify a weakened immune system, which failed to produce sufficient IgM antibodies against the parvovirus B19 infection. Thus, sometimes, the levels of antibodies might be low due to the improper functioning of the immune system and hence, these could not have gotten detected using the parvovirus B19 IgM test. A confirmatory test can be done after two-three weeks.
The parvovirus B19 IgM test result can also be negative in case the test was done before the production of the IgM antibodies or after they started to decline.
